Ambient Field Study
Salt Lake City, Utah
Elwood in Salt Lake City, Utah
September 14-25, 1999
Elwood, along with Dave Suess and Phil Silva, performed an ambient monitoring field study in Salt Lake City, Utah. The sampling site was at the University of Utah's Combustion Research Center (UCRC). Other peripheral instrumentation included meteorological instrumentation, particle sizing instrumentation, such as an Optical Particle Counter (OPC), Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS), and Aerosizer as well as a Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) and a Nephelometer.

The sampling site was located in an industrial area near downtown Salt
Lake City. This is a view of Salt Lake City from the roof of the
sampling site.
This was the instrument setup for the field study within the University
Combustion Research Center.
Here's Phil on the roof with the met station. The met data included
temperature, wind speed and
direction measurements.
This was the first field study in which an ATOFMS operated in the 10^-8's!!!
Dave and Phil were quite pleased.

Salt Lake City was under major construction in preparation for the 2002
Olympics. Consequently, dust was a major particle source during our
field study.

We had a chance to check out the quite interesting city and beautiful
surrounding areas of Salt Lake City, such as the Mormon Temple and the
Great Salt Lake's Antelope Island.
We, Phil and Dave, also had a chance to enjoy some of Utah's beautiful mountains.
