My main research activities involve the characterization of individual aerosol particles present in the atmosphere, and of the reaction processes observed on these particles. This is achieved by employing a newly developed technique, Aerosol Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (ATOFMS), that allows for single particle analysis using mass spectrometry. Results from this type of analysis provide unique and detailed information on the composition of aerosol particles that cannot be obtained from bulk measurements, such as the state of associations among different chemical species, and the degree of reaction/aging, which have substantial influences on the aerosol direct, indirect, and semi-direct effects on radiative forcing and climate. My activities encompass a multidisciplinary approach for characterizing the chemistry of atmospheric particles in the framework of aerosol-climate interactions and atmosphere-ocean-biogeochemical coupling, which is essential for determining some of the present uncertainties concerning these issues.
