For a Vehicle Emissions Study in the Caldecott Tunnel in Berkeley, CA,
Elwood had to travel on a Caltrans
tow truck! After this, the instrument was lowered into the building
with a crane.

These pictures show Elwood sampling particles from one of the tunnel
bores. It is obvious from the attire worn by the operators that it was
rather cold in the fan room, where we were stationed. In the left picture
you can see the fresh-air fans on the left and the exhaust fans on the
right.
In addition to sampling particles from two bores of the tunnel, we also
sampled ambient air as a background check.
One of our collaborators in this study was again Prof.
Glen Cass from Caltech. His group
sampeled particles directly above the tunnel bore. In this picture you
see their equipment, sampling through slits in the bore-ceiling.

At the end of the study, Elwood was lifted out of the fan room with
the crane. Then the instrument was loaded into the moving-truck with the
help of the Caltrans tow truck for its journey back home.
In this picture you finally see the tunnel exit on the eastern side
of the tunnel.
