May 1996 – June 1997: University of Arizona. Characterization of organic self-assembled thin films under the direction of Dr. Jeanne E. Pemberton.
July 1997 to present: University of California, Riverside. Design, optimization, and applications of aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometry under the direction of Dr. Kimberly A. Prather.I am currently a second year graduate student in Prof. Kimberly A. Prather’s research group at the University of California, Riverside. My research background includes applications of aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ATOFMS), a mass
spectrometry technique developed in our laboratory for the real-time analysis of aerosols. Using ATOFMS we have obtained measurements of aerosol concentration, size distributions and composition at high temporal resolution. I have a wealth of experience in the transport and operation of the ATOFMS as well as other particulate and gas phase monitoring instruments used in the field and laboratory. In recent field research in Bakersfield, CA and at the Scripps Pier in LaJolla, CA we used ATOFMS along with other particulate and meteorological sampling systems to analyze aerosols emitting from agricultural, combustion, and marine sources as well as particles formed through heterogeneous chemical processes.
In addition to field measurements, I am also interested in the development of novel analytical techniques incorporated with ATOFMS for use in the analysis of organic aerosols. In the area of laser mass spectrometry this includes two step laser desorption-ionization and vacuum ultraviolet ionization techniques. The development of these resources used in conjunction with ATOFMS will allow for more accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic aerosols such as the determination of individual soot, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and biogenic particles. Other areas of interest are the incorporation of tandem mass spectrometry in ATOFMS to aid in the interpretation of organic mass spectra and improvement of overall instrumental performance.Whiteaker, J.R., Suess, D.T., Prather, K.A.
